The whole point of a dietary plan is to make sure your body is getting what it needs to best serve you. Your cells need enough proteins, fats and essential vitamins and minerals to build new cells. You also need calories for your overall health and well-being. All of this can be satisfied with a raw vegan diet.

There are specific nutritional deficiencies that can come with a raw vegan lifestyle, but there are great supplements to help make up for what's missing. In my e-book Real Life Raw: 7 Day Juice Feasting, I discuss nutritional requirements.

Here are some of the supplements that can make a difference in your diet:

Protein: - Eat a variety of fresh vegetables, including lots of leafy greens, nuts, grains, seeds and sprouted beans and your body will get all the protein it needs. If you choose to supplement with a protein powder or green drink, try Amazing Meal from AmazingGrass.com. This raw super food contains 10 grams of complete protein per serving.

Vitamin B12: - What you want is a sublingual vitamin B12 that includes a B-Complex, because B vitamins work synergistically. Taking one B vitamin without the others actually works against you.

You also want to think about your caloric intake. Getting enough calories may become an issue as you transition to a diet of more raw foods. The better you eat, the less you eat. You simply fill up more quickly when you eat as nature intended, consuming calories loaded with nutrition as opposed to the empty calories you get with the Standard American Diet. Folic Acid: Folate (Folic Acid) - In the United States, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for folate is 400. If your B12 tablet doesn't provide an adequate supply of folate, be sure to supplement.

Iron: Iron - My absolute favorite liquid iron supplement is Floradix Iron + Herbs. This plant-based elixir is packed with elemental iron and other nutrients which promote intestinal absorption.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Dubbed the miracle seed, Mila is a unique blend of chia seeds containing some of the highest levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytonutrients found on the planet today.

Mila has become famous because it has the highest level of Omega-3 available on the market today. Omega-3 is a basic nutrient our body needs to survive, being we cannot produce our own, Omega 3 has to come from our food. The only way to achieve optimal health is to supplement our fatty acids.

One final word of advice. The fact is there may be times when you will need to eat cooked foods. Occasionally my body tells me I need cooked food, so I eat brown rice, steamed quinoa and/or homemade veggie soup. I used to feel guilty about it, but I now realize that's just crazy. Not all cooked foods are equal. Besides, food is medicine and I believe that "healthy"cooked food is a thousand times better for you than pharmaceutical drugs.
